Each editing phase requires different approaches. During the developmental edit phase, I read through the manuscript while taking copious notes on plot, character, pacing, dialogue, and organization. In order to track details and big-picture elements, I usually create several charts for characters, setting, themes, and worldbuilding, including mythology and terminology used throughout the manuscript. This helps me find any inconsistencies or areas that need improvement. After the first read-through, I go through my notes and go back through the manuscript to not only ensure I have a comprehensive understanding of the story, but also to add marginal comments. Finally, I write a detailed letter with 8 sections: Reader and Genre Expectations, Worldbuilding, Pacing, Plot and Story Structure, Point of View and Perspective, Character Development, Dialogue, and Miscellaneous. Under each of these headings, I offer a comprehensive outline of strengths, weaknesses, and offer suggestions for revisions. During the line edit phase, I read through the manuscript and focus on how the author is telling the story. This includes an analysis of language choice, style of writing, and the overall flow of the narrative from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph. For this phase, I make marginal comments and suggest revisions in-document for the author to accept or decline. I also include a detailed letter discussing recurring style, syntactical, and grammatical issues. Finally, during the copyedit phase, I read through the manuscript and focus on more technical aspects of the writing, such as grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, continuity, and language consistency. For this phase, I suggest revisions/corrections of errors in-document for the author to accept or decline.
